Perkins has the physical tools and will get plenty of opportunity in the preseason. That said, Wolfie earned McVay's trust last year and that is a steep obstacle to overcome.

Re: Matthew Stafford gets injured is Wolford the best the Rams can do
Wolford is a solid backup but I don't think there is a qb out that would save us in the event Stafford was out long term.
Wolford could spot start and win a few games as evident with the Cards game in which we needed to win to make the playoffs.

If Wolford has to start any games this season then as my Scottish Uncle would say, "We're Fooked".

I don't think Sean would even consider bringing in somebody from the outside so I doubt there's a better option other than Perkins.
If Stafford misses games, we are totally SCREWED.....unless we have the number one running game in the NFL and still have a top 5 defense.
In that scenario, a backup could possibly get them into the playoffs as a wildcard team.

Really though, of the best teams in the league, who truly isn't fooked if they lose their starter? (I'm of Scottish blood as well, loved your uncle's line!!)

Re: Matthew Stafford gets injured is Wolford the best the Rams can do
If your starting QB is down for a long stretch, you are fucked. True, just about anywhere.
But there is something to be said for at least having a pro caliber QB who can play competently at this level. Nick Foles is hardly going to Canton, but when the Eagles had to turn to him for short busts it went OK on the low end, won the a SB on the high end.
Rams are rolling the dice somewhat with only Wolford and Perkins behind Stafford. You just have to try not to think about it.

And honestly, you are better off not thinking about it.
Look at Hunter Henry last year on the Chargers. Makes a cut during camp, no one around, him, fucks his knee. That's in the cards for every single player at any given time.
You can't dwell on it, or it would paralyze you.

Wolfie is a work in progress and more experience will help him develop his potential. I wouldn't be surprised to see him become more than most imagine. Wolfie is an unknown quantity. I expect him to become our #1 down the line. If Staffie goes down we will be in good Wolfie claws.

Other than for rare exceptions such as the 1999 Rams and 2001 Patriots, that's certainly correct.D-GenerationX wrote: ↑June 14th, 2021, 5:06 am

Should Matthew Stafford miss more than three games (at most) for our team this year, I'm figuring that the season will be pretty much over... ;) :? :x

Say he misses game # 5-8. Perhaps Wolford can not get himself concussed long enough and the D steps it up to go 2-2, or even 3-1. And then Matt comes back.
That's doable.

I'm in the camp that is be confident with Wolf under center in a pinch. He showed showed enough swaggwr, and didn't seem overwhelmed. Agreed....however.....Perkins is bigger and has a much stronger arm....Perkins can run with the ball and does a good job when he does take off but he prefers airing it out.Rams since '66 wrote: ↑June 13th, 2021, 5:05 pm Perkins has the physical tools and will get plenty of opportunity in the preseason. Wolfie is a gamer and wins the intangibles mark....I also think Wolfie has the guys support because he is the little engine that could type.
At the end of the day....if Perkins has absorbed the playbook and can make the correct reads....he has more overall physical talent than Wolfie.
I know the "Wolf pack" may hunt me down for this....but....time will tell.

Wolford played well in the game after the INT. Led them to 3 FGs. Took them twice to the one yard line. Hard to blame him for Akers' fumble or the 2 false starts.Commish wrote: ↑June 14th, 2021, 8:32 pm"Better" as in the sense than ten offensive points is better than nine, do you mean...??Ramsfan08ny wrote: ↑June 14th, 2021, 1:18 pm

Re: Matthew Stafford gets injured is Wolford the best the Rams can do
I agree, but I think we will see if not already that McVay, all though a young mind, is a "what can you do for me now" type a coach. No insult intended. He doesnt bullshit around and if you dont perform. he's cutting the cord. It doesnt matter your veteran status. I truly believe, in do time, he will be one of the best. After 5 yrs, I believe, his worse record has been 9-7. Every year his staff is poached as they get through this salary cap hell hole we are in. As great as he has been, he still gets criticized due to the SB performance... hell, remember Fisher??? SB...WHAT...a great year was 9-7. Some people talking about this Stafford trade is SB or bust, thats a bunch of bs...it's not that easy, lots of things gotta go in your favor. Anyway, kind of ran off with this...Lol, in short, i think McVay is doing things right and we have plenty of top competitive years to come, SB or not! As for Wolford, He was a needed breath of fresh air from Goff. Lets hope Stafford stays healthy.Rams since '66 wrote: ↑June 14th, 2021, 7:08 pmTrue but I think both of those guys kind of torpedoed themselves. Especially after getting big contracts.

Re: Matthew Stafford gets injured is Wolford the best the Rams can do
I don't know that anyone is calling him the next Drew Brees. But again, for a cash strapped team with a predicted high octane offense and SB aspirations, he is good enough to get them through 2-3 games with minimal cap hit. Now if Perkins develops into the next Josh Allen, no one should have a problem with Wolford earning a quick trip to the practice squad.HellRam wrote: ↑June 15th, 2021, 8:41 amJesus Mike...I haven't checked this site in a couple days and I come back to see good ol Mike is still crying. Seriously though, fumbles and false starts happen every game and QBs over come them. If the Wolford wives don't know this it would due then some good to actually watch the games. Regardless, Wolford in 5 qtrs looked like a serviceable back up at best. A good argument can be made I'm being overly generous with that statement.

Wolfie is a very entertaining quarterback because of his charisma, leadership, and zeal. I'm going out on a limb here and I'm predicting that when he plays he might play well enough to start a bona fide quarterback controversy in the future it's likely a matter of time. I love betting on Long Shots and I'm all in on Wolfie even though we might see him remain a benchwarmer for quite some time. I can see him winning playoff games including the Super Bowl. His decisiveness is exceptional. Fire away!

Agreed--in the NFL, being a team's starting QB is a results-driven role, not an excuses-driven one. The best I can say about John Wolford's single complete-game start as a pro QB is that he didn't get in the way of our team's "D" basically winning that critical contest.HellRam wrote: ↑June 15th, 2021, 8:41 am

Agreed--Jared Goff has been the Lions' QB for months now, yet some posters feel compelled to drag him into any discussion concerning our team's current QB situation, whether it's about Matthew Stafford or John Wolford.HellRam wrote: ↑June 15th, 2021, 12:40 pm
Well Mike how does that explain posters who are not "Goff Moms" who question whether Wolford is or not the greatest QB in NFL history? Because there are a few here...
I'd say the latter is true as you make apparent in your inane comments called post. Considering your Goff Derangement Syndrome, it's rather safe to assume your praise of Wolf is based off your wierd hatred for Goff. Particularly when you consider Wolford didn't even perform all that great nor was he even consistently effective in moving the ball downfield. I'm sure if Goff played like how Wolford did, your excuses of false starts and fumbles would be non-existent. ;)
Until the week leading up to the Lions game in Los Angeles, the guy is totally irrelevant to any discussion of the 2021 Rams...

Uhh, no. Question: did you actually see the game? Or just relying box scores/stats?
Yeah so, the Rams easily beat AZ earlier in the year with Goff, he thus would have produced the same results in week 17? That's an incomplete conclusion at best, esp. if you've studied common opponents playing multiple times during any given season. AZ was playing a play-off play-in game. Win and they were in. AZ has made the playoffs 5 times the last 33 years. Think they weren't peak motivated?
Here's a nice game synopsis from Fansided five months ago:
What went wrong for the Rams?
The Rams struggle to run the ball in this one. Rookie running back Cam Akers returned from an ankle sprain and rushed 21 times for a total of 34 yards. The Rams also committed five penalties, many of them false starts when the Rams were first and goal from the one-yard line. And that was just one red zone possess that resulted in the Rams kicking a field goal.
Another time, the Rams had the ball on the one yard line, but Cam Akers fumbled the ball which was subsequently recovered by the Cardinals at their own one-yard line. And of course, there were a number of drops by the Rams receivers. Not just the out-of-reach variety, but the in and out of the hands version. The worst offender was Gerald Everett, who caught two passes, but missed at least other passes that hit him right in the hands and bounced out. One such incompletion was a sure touchdown if he caught
it.
What went right for the Rams?
The entire game was ‘right’ for the Rams. With the exception of some misfiring on the offense (again, what else is new?), the entire team put in one of their most complete efforts of the season. The Rams generate four sacks on defense, many of which killed the Arizona Cardinals offensive drives. Samson Ebukam led the charge, getting two sacks on the day. And the Rams defense stifled the Cardinals all day, allowing just 166 net passing yards, and just 48 rushing yards.
Meanwhile the Rams were able to move the ball on offense. While John Wolford threw the ball for 22 of 38 passes for 223 net yards, he also added 6 rushes for 56 yards. Many of those rushes occurred on third and long, gaining a first down and allowing the offense to remain on the field. And that mobility allowed the Rams to use more empty backfield sets, as well as call some deep passing plays which Wolford seemed to nail with amazing precision.
Sound somewhat right? (yes, for those that watched the game). So ok, make the conclusion on Wolford's tiny NFL sample size that he's destined to be an NFL back-up - most NFL back-ups are as well so nothing earth-shattering there. But he was the best thing going on offense regardless that day. The O-line was pretty well-handled by AZ…so I guess they all should be NFL back-ups moving forward as well, right? Along with Akers. the receivers, coaches…
