Stafford is the best QB, aside from Warner in 40+ years

Post by NN1Badboy »

I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about this and i’ve been a Rams fan for over 40 years. During that time, I have watched a lot of garbage QB’s come and go. I know there were guys like Jawarski, and Namath on the roster, but they were nothing more than old veteran backups at that point.

I know Stafford may be on the downside of his career, but I think he may still have a few more good years left in him. Better late than never, I guess.

In all reality aside from Kurt Warner, I can’t think of another Rams QB since 1976 that are even in the same breath as a guy like Stafford.

Now before you try to argue the point let’s look at it. You’d have a difficult time finding a franchise QB in this mess. Aside from Warner, we have really been a shit show at QB for many years, despite the many tries. Bradford really killed us financially for many years. That greedy bastard got paid well, got injured and didn’t do anything for us.

1976 - 1983 - Pat Haden. Vince Ferrogammo. Haden sucked. Canada ruined Ferrogammo
1984 - 1986 - Jeff Kemp, Deiter Brock, Steve Bartkowski (past his prime) - They all sucked!
1987 - 1993 - Jim Everett - Had some ok years. But overall he sucked
1994 - 1985 - Chris Miller - He sucked
1996 - 1998 - Tony Banks. He sucked
1999 - 2001 - Kurt Warner. Possibly the best Rams QB of all time, but it was short lived.
2002 - 2009 - Mark Bulger - He was a better than average QB. But he was no Kurt Warner.
2010 - 2012 - Sam Bradford - We wasted a lot of money on this douchebag. And he sucked!
2013 - 2016 - Kellen Clemens, Austin Davis, Nick Foles. They all sucked.
2017 - 2020 - Jared Goff. Up and down career with the Rams. Still hasn’t lived up to #1 pick.

I didn't see HOF Joe Namath in that list...LOL

We can't anoint Stafford before he has played a snap in Horns IMO....sure, it looks like he will rise to the top but he could get hurt in game 1 and it's all over.

We have to wait and see what he brings to the table IMO

our best QB’ should be in thread title.

As said above, he hasn’t played a snap. But saying only Warner was better doesn’t seem too controversial.

I know you said past 40 years bit I'll take Roman Gabriel over all of them. Also an MVP. Tough as nails before they put skirts on QBs.

"Old veteran backup" Ron Jaworski was 25 years old (1-0 in playoff starts at QB) when the Rams released him in 1976, effectively replacing him with undersized rookie Pat Haden.

That was arguably a major mistake by our team, since the guy turned out to be one of the NFL's top QBs in the late '70s and early '80s.

I'd like to watch Matthew Stafford take a few regular-season snaps from center for the Good Guys, before deciding that he's currently better than Vince Ferragamo, Jim Everett, Marc Bulger and Jared Goff were at their peaks for the Rams.

Can’t believe you missed James Harris ‘73-‘76 and I’ll give you a pass on John Hadl. Historically? We had a few, some guys named Norm Van Brocklin, Bob Waterfield, Roman Gabriel.... Let’s hope Stafford isn’t listed with Burt Jones and Dan Pastorini.

I'd put Goff at 2-3 given time to pass. There were some passes where he threw dimes like few others.

Not sure where Stafford will rank on all time lists for the Rams, but what it does appear he will bring is football IQ, the ability to read defenses, excellent pocket awareness and a stellar arm.

Hopefully that will relax the control freak element that was coming out in McVay as he appeared to micromanage Goff through every play in the last 18 months?

If McVay can relax again, re-find his mojo and click with Stafford then he's got the ability to be very high on these lists in 5 or 6 years time?

You make it sound like that was a "McVay" problem, when in fact it was a "Goff" problem.

Mac only micromanaged because it was necessary, and Goff never demanded or showed he can play at a high level without the "training wheels."
No, not at all. McVay was forced to micromanage Goff due to his regression. It was certainly a Goff problem and weighed heavily on McVay in my opinion.

This is not well thought out. We still have a weak OL regardless of what PFF thinks. Not outside threat to speak of. And McVays RB by committee approach has failed to date. I can't believe you slam Bradford like you do. He never had any supporting cast. And Stafford has yet to take a practice snap. I'll wait several months before I form an opinion. Other than McVay has placed himself firmly on the hot seat.

Oh contraire. Stafford has not proven anything. Other than the fact that people make excuses for him. He had years with arguably the best wideout in history and did NATHIN. We don't have a deep threat near the caliber of Megatron. Face facts. If we have to dink and dunk our way up the field. We will fail. And there is nothing that says this won't be the case. At least until proven otherwise.

Yes, at his peak (2017-18) Jared Goff was a Pro Bowl QB and hit on some terrific passes for the Rams... :) 8-)

I’d put Bulger’s prime years as better than Stafford.

You can discount lot of QB stats when they put up numbers on bad teams. That means lot of garbage time yards are being accumulated, inconsequential to winning (which is the goal). I think Stafford has lot of those judging from the massive yardage totals and poor w/l record.

From 1985 onward, of guys Rams had in their prime:

1 Warner
2 Bulger
3 Stafford
4. Goff
5. Everett
6. Keenum/Foles
7. Bradford
8. Banks

He definitely has to show that he can. It's no given.

He's also played <checks notes>...zero downs for this team. So slotting him right behind a legit Hall Of Famer already seems silly to me.

I like your list. And I realize Stafford hasn’t played a down in a Rams uniform yet. But after a couple of good years in LA and he will easily glide past Bulger. His career as a whole may even end up close to Warner. Stafford did have Megatron, but he also played on some very bad teams. But if he can play in LA for 3-5 years under McVay and continue to play well, then he could one day be a hall of fame.

Time will tell

I hope your right OP

But,even if the Los Angeles Rams go on a 57 game winning streak winning 3 Super Bowls in a row it’ll be meaningless to us “REAL RAM FANS) because of the clown costumes you have these players dressed in

These are by far the most putrid looking satanic ,horrifically ugly uniforms any pro league has ever seen and if you don’t change them immediately back to the styles and colors they were when I and my other 500 friends were kids we will turn off our Sunday Ticket subscriptions and NEVER watch a game of yours nor patronize any business that buys commercials during your broadcasts

You hear that Roger Goodell????

Rodger??!!!

RODGE???

Where you at STAN KROENKE???you evil motherfucker for returning the Los Angeles Rams back to their rightful home but then making them wear Satanic helmets and ugly uniforms

BAAAAAAa!!!!!

When Stafford had Megatron he is one of the few QB to ever throw for 5k yards and in same season 40+ TD's that he never won a playoff game is a result of never having a shut down defense or a running game to eat clock at end of game. Plus he just passes the eyeball test, He has more 4th qtr comebacks than any QB in NFL since he entered the league. People discount him because of the Lions, when guys like Rodgers talks him up when he praises very few in the league we should take notice.

Can't overgeneralize. In 2014 they had a defense ranked 2nd in yards and 3rd in points. That's a shut down defense. They went 11-5 that year, their best year with Stafford. It's true they did not have a running game.

Can't overgeneralize. In 2014 they had a defense ranked 2nd in yards and 3rd in points. That's a shut down defense. They went 11-5 that year, their best year with Stafford. It's true they did not have a running game.
That is true but that was the year that every play the Lions ran that was effective at end of game they got a holding call and the picked up PI call that was clearly PI. One of the worst officiated games ever.
