They tried him on the right side too, but Robinson felt he was much more effective off the left side. He never lined up at DE in the Rams base defense which was a two gap for the 3 down linemen.
I'm merely going by the roster listings employed by the Rams franchise, which identify Kevin Greene's position as being LOLB during his excellent years with our team, particularly the 1988 and '89 seasons, during both of which he notched 16.5 sacks.

The fact is that he couldn't break into the Good Guys' starting lineup as a DE ('85-87), yet once switched to OLB (primarily in Fritz Shurmur's 'Eagle' defense) he became a defensive superstar... :) 8-)

Rams switched to a 3-4 when they hired Robinson in 83. Greene kind of made himself into an NFL edge guy. Unfortunately he was a heavy roid user.

Well, if I recall back to several decades ago, Fritz Shurmur's 'Eagle' defense featured five LBs, it did cover up some defensive deficencies yet on occasion could be victimized for long gains. (Remember the Rams' 27-30 loss to the 49ers on Monday Night Football near the end of the 1989 regular season?)

The term "edge rusher" wasn't yet used during Kevin Greene's tenure with our team, although today that's basically how he would be described in his best years with the Good Guys... :) 8-) :geek:
